I was told on my Cursillo back in 1974 that Palanca means lever—the word is related to the English word plank. A lever is a simple machine described and studied in first Physics class. For instance: To move a large rock out of a pothole, you could try to pick it up but inertia and gravity are working against you. A lever allows you to move objects much larger than you could unaided.
